XLCR Oil Filter

Howdy Folks,

This is a very embarrassing thing for a Harley Specialist to ask, but where the f**k is the oil filter on an 1978 XLCR? The bike looks to be all original.

The manual for the "Vanilla" Iron Head Sporty shows a drop in filter in the oil tank. This doesn't have the same oil tank as the common or garden XL, and this tank doesn't have a filter in it.

A brief search of the surrounding area did not reveal any oil filter AT ALL!

Question is: Am I going barmy? If this model has a filter, where the chuff is it?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Tooty

Re: XLCR Oil Filter

From memory, I think it's under the swingarm, or somewhere equally stupid.

Paul,

You're not going barmy. There isn't one. Not fitted to this model. Some have them fitted as an afterthought, but they wern't fitted on the standard original models, hence the oil change every 2,500 mls.Be gentle with her. My old girls getting on a bit now. See you next week.

Re: XLCR Oil Filter

its in exactly the same place as your find one a 1979 sportster ......

you won't find one because on a $50 development budget the factory forgot to fit one

and this was the year they supposedly introduced quality control ????

in 1980 / 81 they stuck one behind the rear cylinder to assist with warming up the oil

have fitted one on my bike can send you the photos if you like

mkIII norton commando filter head fitted to front engine mount where it should be in the breeze

later sportster engine mounts had a filter here but theses mounts don't fit the 77 frame, I did try this without success

80-84 harley filters fit the Norton mount as do Ducati and Citroen 2CV
