sportster oil pump

Can a oil pump be removed off a 77 sportster without disturbing the cam cover whilst the motor is still in the frame

I know the oil pump will come off if the cover is removed

Re: sportster oil pump

I don't have a factory service manual for 77 models Graeme, but mine goes up to 76 and says that you can't take the pump off without removing engine from frame due to clearance issues.

Hope this helps.

Re: sportster oil pump

for 77 they notched the frame so the oil pump can be removed with the motor in the frame

I am trying to avoid pulling the cam cover off (again) - last time the damn cams fell out and I had to retime everything

bloody oil pump is leaking ????

Great fun... not!

Again going by my book, it says that you can take the pump off without removing the cam cover, but bear in mind that's with the lump out of the frame.

Sorry I can't be more specific, never owned a 77-on Ironhead!

If your going to take the cam cover off Graeme why not cut the thing so next time you don't have to remove it.

I'm hopefully going to find a cam cover at Dorking to do exactly that.

Just a thought.

Re: sportster oil pump

I already have a spare cam cover that has been trimmed back and are seriously considering putting it on the bike

however its a XLCR and I want to keep the bike as standard looking as possible

Reply to oil pump removal, 77 XL

All sportsters up to 1977, but not including 77, has to remove cam cover if you remove oil pump. You MUST time the oil pump breather gears !!! The kicker is :: You have to remove the engine from the frame to remove oil pump. I hope this will answer that man's Queston.
