Re: 78 Ironhead wheel swap ?

Hi, Chilly, what are you doing with a 78? Mine is a 78 so, yes these wheels will fit except the rear is wrong unless you switch to disc brake. Also, check what front forks you have and thus the axle length. They will not necessarily the same as stock.

Are you at the Vintage and Sportster weekend? i will get there somehow, haven't got the Sporty going properly so I may have to be a visitor on the B*W. I have the discs with the XL parts lists and also the factory manual. I know, I meant to send them ages ago. sorry.

Andrew

Re: 78 Ironhead wheel swap ?

Chilly

The ad says they are 7o's FXR?? Is there such a model?

They look similar to my '77 FXS ones I think. If so, the front should be pretty straight forward as I think the axles are the same. The back one would not be straight forward though.

Anything is possible if you are prepared to do the machining.

I should have FXS ready in time to also be at Vintage next weekend, where you are welcome to compare bikes, setup etc.

Re: 78 Ironhead wheel swap ?

The Sporty is my sons, who has just recently bought it,needs new wheels as the spoked ones are buggered ,this seems the cheepest way round to smartening it up.

Hi Andy
Will be there hopefully,i'm sure a flat twin will be welcomed with open arms
Iv'e still got my 72 but not done anything to it yet, busy on a Guzzi at the moment

Hi Boris
I saw the FXR bit and thought maybe he means an FXE/FXS or similar
I can do a bit of machining so long as the swing isn't over 4.5"
Look forward to seeing the FXS,i'll be on my ,Shusssssh !!!,-------
1988 Evo Superglide

Hi Kiwi
From memory i can't think if it has a drum or disc rear,i'll let you know what he's got tomorrow
Will that wheel match those on e-bay,or are front mags easy to come by that will match ?

Thanks folks
Chill

Re: 78 Ironhead wheel swap ?

Hi Chills,
it is possible to put a disc onto a 78. You will have to make a braket up to hold the caliper and then attach to the swinging arm somehow. Atlenatively, look for a 79 or later swinging arm. but they are like gold dust ( cos everyone wants one to convert an earlier FE to rear disc). Look on Sportster.org for how to do that. You will need a new wheel to take the disc etsc. i bought a new chrome drum brake and sprocket combo in the US last year for not too much, new axle, spokes and rim - cheap. (not!)

Well, a flat twin is one thing, a flat four????? It is nearly vintage though! 22 years old and counting.

See you.

Andrew

Re: 78 Ironhead wheel swap ?

Thanks for the replies - I am newly registered son of Chilly!!
Next time I will probably check on the drum brake bit first .
In the meantime I am trying to scrounge Dad's spare back wheel and and am looking out for a front so if anyone is looking to sell a descent one please let me know. Cheers.
