sportster regulator

I am replacing the black box regulator on my sporty with the earlier style mechanical regulator

What is the 61 terminal on the regulator for?

It doesn't appear in any wiring diagrams but it must have some function

Re: sportster regulator

Hi Graeme,

T'was used on batteryless pre 69 CH to fit a capacitor to help the dynamo kick in at low revs...

Not used after 70.

61 goes to a capacitor #32727-63 ,and the clamp round the capacitor to terminal D- and earth
12 volt Bosch regulator #74511-65 if magneto but no battery is used.
61 not used if battery in system, D- to earth.
2 brush generators, Sportster or 74.

Re: sportster regulator

thanks for the info

have checked out tips and tricks and also the factory manual 71 -78 neither mentioned the 61 tab

interestingly the XLH & XLCH got the old style regulator for 77/78

the XLCR got the new style throw away (often) black box
