Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Dont know what youre seeing in your clymer chilly, mine says HD power blend super premium in table 6 on page 83. Sure no way run ATF if youre gonna put loadsa miles on it. I put Harleys sportster trans in my old ironhead, best of luck see you around.

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Well, Chilly,

I would say that SAE 50 is way too thick for the workings of the wet clutch!!!

So would I Patrick; this shows how much notice I take of a Clymer manual, got that one and I use Sport-Trans!

Mind you that's cause Sport-Trans was recommended to me by the likes of Jim Brown, who knows his bits and I trust his advice; just never bothered with owt else.

Yep !,i'd go with that Patrick, way to thick for us.

I reckon that maybe we have to take into account that their specs are for hotter climates than ours ?

Pre-71 is dry clutch so you'd be able to use a heavier oil in the gearbox.

I'm sure Patrick will agree with me that the wet clutch was not exactly a design advance, especially for those who enjoyed Sporty performance to the full.

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Result - 1 MOT

Interesting ride i must say, good job i didn't have to have an emergency stop, that front brake is crap
engine has plenty of grunt + get up and go ,just need to set the carb up now,its running a bit rich.

Excellant starter now,re timed the ignition,it was advanced + got the points to open up within a couple of thou of each other, its now a pussy cat

Now for the DVLA and an age related plate, hopefully

Not the best anchor in the world is it? Mind you the single disc which superseded it was no great shakes either.

As you'll know from your Brit bikes a lot of the starting's down to learned technique and familiarity with a particular engine, no two are ever quite the same. I set mine up to run a bit rich, seems to like it better and got rid of an annoying flat spot.

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Hi Chilly, nice one on the MOT,
If your planning on changing the brake I recommend a nissan caliper off a honda bluebird (i think thats the make).
I've got pics and a template for the mounting bracket if you ever need it.
It works really well.
