It works really well.

If Chilly's thinking of changing the front brake he's got to change the whole front end, Tibbs; 72's drum brake and in 73 they went over to the Showa fork with disc brake set-up.

What I'd suggest, Chilly, is that you contact these people;

Federal-Mogul Corporation Chapel-en-le-Frith,
Friction

Hayfield Road

Chapel-en-le-Frith (High Peak)
Derbyshire
United Kingdom
SK23 0JP

They used to be called Ferodo, and at one time offered a service to match brake linings to your drum. Dave Maulson had this done to his 48 Pan some years ago, and reckoned it made the drum nearly as good as a single disc.

Don't know if they do it now, but may be worth an ask. Anyone in your local VMCC section who's into classic racing might be able to help you.

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

They don't exist anymore, Kev...

One of their guys went on to open "Classic Brake Services", he did reline my XLRTT front brake with "green" lining/skimmed the drum/mated the brake to the drum on a lathe for a ridiculously low amount...

BUT... His site is down!!! Don't know if he's folded or temp problems!!!

That's the adress:

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Thanks for the advice Tibbs and Kev

Will stick with the drum at the moment as i want to leave the bike as it is for a while, never thought i would ,but for the time being its good fun as it is.

Most probably have a look at the linings etc.

My lad and i have just fitted a 39 mm front end to his 76 Sporty,so we have a bit of knowhow on this conversion ,if i did a change it would be to 39 mm.

Had some green linings fitted to my Triton years back Patrick, bit sharp/snatchy at low speeds i found.

Cheers
Chill

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Just been looking at one of Alan Girdlers Harley books and came across this (oil again)

Ref --- Ironhead Sportster Primary/G/box oil --

Quote"

Most people with the post 71 wet clutch fitted Barnet plates + springs and run ATF in the Primary and G/Box .

Looking at the Clymer Spec at the front of this post it does say ATF for 71 on, and 50 grade for the dry clutch, not 50 for the post 71 models as some thought .

Bloody hell its gonna be a long winter

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Hi Chilly; just out of interest (not wishing to re-enter the debate on oil types), what edition is your Clymer manual?
Mine is Seventh Edition, printed July 1999; not only are all oils H-D recommended types (without saying what 'ordinary' equivalents you could use), they've also dropped the tuning section - seems to me the MoCo or some liability issue got at them.
Cheers,
Pete

Re: Ironhead gearbox oil ?

Hello Pete

Lordy Lordy !, no oil debate please ,

just thought it was an interesting point seeing Alan Girdler refering to the use of ATF in the Ironheads primary/g/box .

Checked the manual and its their second edition going up to 1977 .

Interesting theory you have there.

Chilly
