clutch cable fitting (paranoia clearly)

right went to fit the clutch cable, and after spending ages scratching the black levers with my market circlip pliers i eventually got the pingfucket off whereby it lived up to its name and vanished amongst the trike parts in the corner of the garage, then went to fit the cable now i have came across a problem with the cable inplace i cant get the pin back in, now do i push the cable out of the way to the top or the bottom, or do i cut a slot in the pin, im really paranoid about breaking things or doing it wrong

Re: clutch cable fitting (paranoia clearly)

Depending on the bike....

Remove the lower end of the cable from the clutch end, pull the cable through/around/up the frame so it is free from the rest of the bike and only held by the pin in the bar lever mount, then turn/rotate the pin and cable around in the lever housing so the back of the pin is now facing the front.
The slot to remove the cable should/might be on veiw now at the front, then it's a case of push the cable through a couple of inches then put it out of the slot...bingo! job done. At least that's where mine was many, many years ago the first time I looked for mine. To install a new cable it's the reverse of the above.
Hope this is of help.

heres the clutch cable in the lever now how do i get the pin in?

Re: clutch cable fitting (paranoia clearly)

aha i have solved the problem (i think)the end of the cable hasnt got the hoop which the pin slides into, cos obviously its not a standard lever for this bike so now i need to get another cable that has the hoop cos the cable that i have (original flh item for 1969 to early 1979 ) has (i guess ? ) a totally different fitting, so can anyone recommend a local supplier other than oxford hd

Re: clutch cable fitting (paranoia clearly)

It's the "pin" that's wrong, that looks like a lever pivot or a much later cable pin, you need an ordinary Shovel type pin that does indeed have a double diameter slot in it, the cable is probably correct, the ones with a hoop are for Evos. Hope that makes sense.
