shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

Right because i needed to fit the clutch bracket i thought i would fit my new oil tank ( squareish horseshoe jobby ) there are three pipes on the bottom, one marked F (feed /filter? ) one marked R (return? ) and the other marked V,

now here is my first problem what goes where? second problem i took four pipes off the original oil tank and there is only three fittings on the new tank..... arrrggghhhhhh

oh and guess what random wires all over the place i really wish i had stayed in bed this morning

Re: shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

It is too long since I last owned a shovel!

First comment is that you should be referring to your factory workshop manual, in which case the answer will be bleeding obvious! According to my evo ditto manual the three pipes are indeed Feed, Return and oil tank Vent.

There is a fourth pipe from the oil pump to the air cleaner, which is the crankcase vent.

Hope that helps!

Cool Re: shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

well i have decided to just junk the existing lines and just run some intact braided jobbies, i have got a oil line diagram so i will know what goes where i now have to sort out all the random mish mash of wiring, but for some weird reason the front brakes were stuck on when i tried to wheel her back in the garage i really wish i had stayed in bed

Re: shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

Books and diagrams are only of any use if you have standard HD pump / tank, as the layout on aftermarket ones vary. Did you make any notes of what each did before removing?

Standard set up for yours is from memory, so cross reference your diagram

Feed from the bottom of the tank - if you have 2 stubs on PUMP BODY parallel (HD) it goes to the 1 on the right, if they are not parallel (S&S, Revtech, etc) it's the lower 1.

The other stub on the pump body is return, which runs to the cap at the top of the tank, where the drop-in filter is. Are you running original type filter?

The large stub on the CASE, forward of the pump, near rear exhaust tappet is vent, which goes to the other fitting at the top of the tank.

There is also a large stub, next to the pressure switch, this vents separately - to the air filter originally, often changed to the K&N style pleated filter.

NB this is for standard setup.......FFS check what yours is before running it, and make certain that oil is returning to the filter, or you may be very sorry!!!

Thanks
Yep that figures with the diagram the only thing that puzzled me was that i had three lines coming from the top of the original oil tank, i have labelled what went where but i will double check everything before even contemplating starting her, but im gonna need new lines cos the originals are a bit past it

Have you cracked what the fourth pipe to/from the tank is for? Could be that crankcase vent I suppose.

Can you put some photo's up, I can't ever remember 'stock' oil tanks having 4 lines.

If I remember correctly there are normally 3, two from the bottom and one from the top.

Re: shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

There are only 2 part numbers for standard BT tanks from 68 to 82 as far as I can see, and both have 3 fittings.... 1 at the bottom, 2 at the top tho.

Re: shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

sounds like you have ditched the stock oil tank (as in your gallery pix) for a horseshoe style. In which case the oil tank line info in the manual won't help you.

Here's the news from the oil pump end: this diagram was drawn for people isolating the stock primary set-up on their Shovel, which is a very smart idea also. But crucially, it tell you which is VENT, which is FEED and which is RETURN. Easy.

Re: shovel oil tank fittings ( can open, worms everywhere )

heres a pic of the oil tank, dont forget the feed pipe underneath, as well as the connections on top,

http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.c...o=1976&cat=500

but i think that the primary may have already been isolated as there is no line coming out of the primary case and the primary feed and return have been looped into the fourth pipe does that sound feasable?, this might also explain the leaky primary as well if there is oil in there too lube the primary chain?
