front calipers and inner tubes

the past couple of times i have wheeled the bike in and out the garage the front brakes have been seized, till i have givven the calipers a small tap with a rubber mallet, so the next question is whats it likely to be then caliper seals? master cylinder seals or something else thats gonna cost a bomb

and a quick word of warning if you have side mounted valves on your 16" rims dont fit iron cross valve caps (yes they look very cool indeed) cos it just caught on the caliper and snapped the valve off the tube

arrrrrgggghhhhhh

Re: front calipers and inner tubes

If it's a single piston caliper it will be mechanical.
The slider pins need cleaning and lubing.

Re: front calipers and inner tubes

As with all caliper jobs, make sure also the pads move ok in their locations.
Use a good quality copper grease, sparingly on pins.
Check piston movement anyway but 99% of times it's the sliders.

Re: front calipers and inner tubes

If they are harley calipers seriously consider changing them to something that works

The hd original equip may pass an mot but if you need to stop in a hurry they are not up to standard

Cool Re: front calipers and inner tubes

damn sight cheaper option is a second hand jap - i have a fireblade caliper tucked away on the rear of mine - yamaha r1-6 blue spots are very decent units.

Hi Nick, what master cylinder are you using with that 'blade caliper ?
I've been considering fitting a jap unit for a while, just wondered if my Wagner cylinder would be compatible.
Thanks, J.

Don't know if you remember J but I had a Kawasaki caliper on my shovel all those years ago and it run off my harley master cylinder worked a treat.
