Mine's on points, mate and I regret I'm not overly electrical-minded so I'll have to pass on this one sorry.. There'll no doubt be someone on this evening who's more up to speed on this.

if you have a 1978.5 to 1984 factory service manual, as I suspect you have, then it does not show points ignition. All Big Twins from 1978.5 and later were electronic ignition, though those very late 70s bikes were a curious mix of old-style advance PLATE and a module. IF you do have points, you have a wire from top of coil to the points assembly.....and the only other wire in sight is the condensor wire....from the same junction at the top of the timing cover down to that little cylinder at the bottom, which is the condensor itself. There is NO other wiring in the nosecone. Here is my 1980 nosecone with points: ![]() That big black wire on the left goes back to top of coil. On your bike.....you will have the same, points back to coil, and the other coil wire will, typically, go from coil terminal back up to handlebar KILL switch, and the other side goes back to the ignition circuitbreaker, then ignition switch....... Points on any post 1977 Harley is a custom choice, instead of the factory-fitted electronic module. Good luck. Last edited by kiwidave; 12-06-2009 at 04:46 PM. |

yr welcome. Print out these diagrams and shove them in your manual....they kinda simplify things.....two different drawings for the same set-up (though both omit the kill switch, note) ![]() |
