| 23 tooth sprocket
Hi all, well Im stuck with the progress of the Ironhead. I need the the ignition timing set and can't find anyone to help me. I don't have the money to pay an indie shop and after the last time I gave my bike to an indie, I am very reluctant to do it again. Anyway, I want to fit a 23 tooth drive sprocket (just in case I ever get this bike on the road), had a look around the web, no look. Can anyone tell me where I can buy one, or does anyone have one in excellent condition they would like to sell, to fit a 4 speed 81. Thanking you all in advance. Andy. ps. what is the correct part number for said item? |

Contact Heidi at THS (she advertises in the club magazine) she is possibly the best source of parts for Iron Heads and Shovels in this country and can supply parts from all the major catalogues Unlike official dealers she actually has parts in stock |

Hi, kiwidave, my bike has electronic ignition. Needs setting at 40 degrees advance on the front pot at 3000 rpm. I borrowed a dial back strobe light but I couldn't get it to work for me. At present it is statically timed as per the instructions that came with the ignition. I am desperate for help, so if any one is in the Leeds or West Yorkshire area I would really appreciate help sorting this out. Where is Jeff's at riverside nickb? Many thanks, Andy Hog |

Hi Andy, What sort of electronic ignition and will the bike run? Static timing is usually OK to get you going and then fine tune it by running it up a hill steep enough for it to top out at about seventy. Then adjust a tiny bit and try again aiming for the adjustment that gives you the highest speed. Obviously watching out for detonation. As far as the 23 tooth sprocket is concerned. I would leave that until the bike is running well and you've got used to it. Then adjust the gearing to suit your riding style. In my opinion trying to pull too high gearing is more suited to Big Twins.

| Re: 23 tooth sprocket
I run a 21 to make it a bit more comfortable at motorway speeds, that seems about right. I think that you have to remove some metal off the case to run a 23, or the chain does it for you! As for the timing, static timing should sort enough to get you going and then you can run somewhere for a dynamic check out. Jeff, Riverside is at Putney, London. maybe a bit far to go for a timing check. Andrew 78 xlh. Last edited by 1978xlh; 22-06-2009 at 09:10 PM. Reason: added a bit |
