Yoiks my leg! Tips with S&S Super E?

After going through a good patch where my pan was starting on the first kick pretty much every time, i hav now hit a brick wall!!
It was running a bit rich so i tweaked the carb ever so slightly and it's now as is if it's a different bike - i can't get the bloody thing to start at all, and I'm now slumped infront of the PC is a sweaty heap!!
What's it with S&S, i thought they were a synch....or am I doing something wrong.
Tips anyone...?
My old routine was fuel on, two twists, two primeing kicks and then ignition on, slight lift on the enricher and kick and away.
I have gone bac to the factory S&S settings as per the carb fitting manual, but to no avail. I have taken the plugs out regularly, they are sooty, but clean up OK and it seems to want to start after that.....ish.
I had it running twice today, eventually, but each time it died when I touched the carb.....

Re: Yoiks my leg! Tips with S&S Super E?

In my experience difficult pan starting is usually intake manifold leaks, or tappets loosening. I think you are saying yours is rich so it doesn't sound like either of those.

My Pan with Super E doesn't like the enrichener if it's been run in the previous couple of weeks - especially in summer. My starting drill is enrichener on full for 2 priming kicks, 2 squirts on pump, enrichener off ignition on, plus a hint of throttle open. If it doesn't start within a couple ok kicks it's flooded - I check by the strong smell of petrol, so with ignition on, throttle wide open and kick.

It's a very fine line with any pan between priming, and flooding!

What ignition are you running? I retard the dizzy a few degrees to start. I also fitted Accel super coil and leads, and run point and plug gap a couple of thou wider than the book says - a serious spark. Hang in there!

Re: Yoiks my leg! Tips with S&S Super E?

Thanks Boris,
I had another go at it this morning before going to work (having left it since Sunday) and still no joy; two twists, two priming kicks, enricher on a tad and ignition etc; all i got were two very loud farts out the back end.
Plugs are cleaned off, and i checked the points gap (now set to .020 from what was around .023).
I will give your way a crack tonight when i get back. What with work at the momnent, i'm short of time.
If it goes on much longer I ain't going to get to the International!!

Snowflake

'Farting' sound on mine always means not enough fuel to start or keep running. Maybe needs more priming?

When it's flooded it doesn't make any sound, or kick back - until about the 5th kick with the throttle held wide open.

Hope to see you and the pan at the 60th - hopefully I will get the time to sort and MoT mine before then as well

Snowflake, it is all here!!:

this link solves 90% of issues:

need to go deeper? go here:

Need more? pm me your address for a xerox of an article by former 20-year S&S employee Tom Johnson. From The Horse magazine about 2yrs ago. All you need to know about S&S set-up, in simple terms. Fantastic reference.

I have just been through all this.....and it's all good now on my Shovel thanks to these links. I was flooding...had huge issues....went through 10 plugs....blah blah blah

After i rebuilt my carb with leaner intermediate jet, new needle and seat, my whole routine changed on the kick. Still learning it.

BEWARE having accel pump screw out too far.

BEWARE needle and seat leak....hang a clear hose from high into carb inlet... fill with fuel, mark the fuel level, walk away for 10min...... see if the level drops at the top of hose.

BEWARE also a simple fact i have only just discovered. (We are always learning). Once a plug fouls, it may NEVER work again.

Yep. Have a whole box-full of 18mm plugs for the 45 which fall into that category!

Re: Yoiks my leg! Tips with S&S Super E?

Kiwi,
Thanks for that mate (Kev - I've just ordered a sh*t load of plugs so I have some spares), i'll go through all that - if you could send me the article anyway, it would be good to have a copy anyway - funnily enough when i was searching online to sort this out, that article was mentioned, but I couldn't find it anywhere....maybe I didn't look hard enough.
Anyway, tomorrow's plan is to check the points and clean them up a bit (there's a bit of gunk on the breaker cam), check the connection and makesure there's no earthing anywhere, cleaning out the carb and checking the settings of the variuos screws, check the spark and put in some new plugs.
...then....i'm going to have another go and follow Kiwi's points....here goes!!

Definition of junk.... stuff you throw away the week before you need it.

You're not going to persuade me that you have no duff spark plugs in your workshop Scotty?
