Clutch basket spacers

Hi all,

fitted in a new clutch today. I have being having alot of gear selction problems, hence the new clutch.

I measured the spacers and they are in tollerance, the dual springs are as well.

When I have bolted down the pressure disc (has the 6 ni lock nuts), the gap between the pressure disc & the outer drive plate is less than 1/8".

The FM states the min. gap is 1/8". If the spacers and springs are in acceptable tolerances, why is the gap less than the FM min?

When I back off the 6 ni locks to get the 1/8" min. gap, they are no longer tight.

The gear selction has improved with the fitting of the new clutch.

Taking the bike out tomorrow for a check on how the new clutch is working.

Thanking you all in advance.

Andy.

Re: Clutch basket spacers

Hi Andy,

The 1/8th clearance is for when there are no spacers, early 70s wet clutch.

If you fit them, tighten fully against them.

If you still have problems, check your plates on their outer edges. If sharp at some points and not at others, your clutch is not pulling out straight. File down sharp edges and reassemble, it will be a bit better.

The spacers don't help at all to get the clutch to disengade straight. I'd rather get rid of them.

This "spider" will help to set a spacerless clutch right, but make sure your nylocks are new...

Re: Clutch basket spacers update

Thanks French Owl,

love that spider cover you made, fantastic.

Took the bike out for a 2 mile ride (as it is not legal). The new cluth worked really well, gear selction was great and no creep. I can find neutral again but it is still dificult to find when the bike is not moving. I am putting this down to the Daniel Boone forwards I have fitted. Not the delicated feel of the mid setting position where you can feel the gear selection quite well.

Andy.

Re: Clutch basket spacers

Hi Andy,

Neutral is a ba*tard to find when not moving on these wet clutch Iron Heads...

Think ahead and always select neutral around 10mph... That will make your clutch last longer as well...
