Oil Leak

Filled my tank up with oil & it is leaking out from the oil pump. Question is if there is supposed to be a grub screw where it is leaking from ? Have attached a pic from another source & clearly looks to me as if there is no screw there, any ideas ?

Re: Oil Leak

No screw there mate. Are you certain it's coming from there or from one of the mounting bolts?

Re: Oil Leak

Is it a slight weep?
There is a recess there as though it was used to drill an oilway then blocked off.
If only a slight weep then you could try degreasing it and putting in some epoxy metal repair paste.
From memory the bottom of that hump is a rounded casting so if drill it would have to be from the top. You've got me wondering now,but as Kev says,no screw there.
My engines are blocked in at the mo,don't ask, but I'll have a poke around on Friday.
You're sure it's not running down from the feed pipe connection above?

No screw

Re: Oil Leak

I did not think there was a screw there (thought i was going crazy!), but is definately leaking oil from there, have cleaned it off again & you can clearly see oil oozing slowly out.

Now i think about it when i bought it home the next day there was a very small amount of oil under the bike, but maybe now after dismantling and putting back together with fresh oil it seems to be leaking quicker.

Well looks like i will have to replace it, have had a quote for a secondhand one & can u believe it they want £150 !!!

sorry pic is a bit out of focus.

Re: Oil Leak

You`re a lucky man Dave.

If I had an oily engine on a dining room chair, I would be sleeping in the garden!

Re: Oil Leak

I would have thought that was repairable? Drain oil, degrease and as Dave said use some two-part metal putty. Has to be worth a try before you shell out on a replacement.

Re: Oil Leak

Thats just a little metal core plug thats pressed in after the relief hole was drilled when the pump was made.

You may be able to tap it further in, metal putty, braze, solder or weld to get a seal - I doubt it will come out in one piece and Ive never heard of a replacement being available.

You could also drill it out, thread the hole and put a grub screw in, fill the slot to get the same finished effect.

Re: Oil Leak

Don't replace the body, most will be worn or had pipe niple repaired (£10 job).
Remove the pump, strip and degrease it,and repair with metal mender. There's little pressure and worst can happen is it leaks again.
You could rebuild pump with new vanes, springs, balls, and a set of cad nuts and bolts for circa £30,but as you'd have run it as is without leak,I wouldn't bother for now.
When you strip it,keep parts for each hole on their own, there's 3 springs but 2 types.

Phil, putting an engine on a chair would be totaly inappropriate.

I cut the chair up first.
