Yep your're right, I realised that when I put them back in....

But have only just come in after an extended test ride... which would have been even longer but it's getting a bit cold out there now.

PS I put some PTFE tape on my primary drain plug, it had some on from the first service & I though it would do no harm.

Re: Torx/Hex bits

Mine's got T27 Torx bolts on the Derby cover. All the other bolts on the side covers are hex bolts. Most are 3/16", but the exhaust bracket bolt on the sprocket cover is 5/16" and the chain inspection cover is 5/32". Not sure about the timing cover: 3/32" is too small, and 7/64" is too big. It appears to be 2.5mm, can this be right?

SJC69, you're right about the T27; I've got a set of Halfords Professional (?) Torx bits, 7 bits on a rail (seem reasonably good quality actually). The 7 bits are: T20, T25, T30, T40, T45, T50, and T55. No T27.

Re: Torx/Hex bits

Just an update here

RE:- Halfords Professional T27 Torx bit Sockets.

They do stock them as a separate (i.e. individual) item in 3/8" Drive. About £2-60, saw some today.

SJC,

That's fab bit of kit you have there for the oil filter removal. Is that a home-made job or are they available? I have used a filter strap in the past but they are a pain in the ar*e to get any purchase on.

That's not my piccie but I have the same filter removal tool, mine came from Hein Gerrike around £2.50 fits a 3/8" socket drive.

I too got fed up with the chain type.

Coke bottle from Tesco!!!!!

I am sorry but I can't tell what number or size the filter tool is.
Best to take a new filter along with you.
{An old one will work too, but a bit messy! }

Part of the problem is with a lot of Torx tools is their ends have a taper on them unlike an Allen key which are full hex to the bottom, so can be round off the screw by the tool slipping out more easily.

1 If you have a Torx bit with no taper try that first after giving the head of the screw a hard tap with a hammer. You can use something else to direct the hit to the screw. I.e. a bar or the Torx socket with an extension on it this could help break it loose. Or use the socket on an impact driver.

2 Force an old a suitable sized Allen key into the head.

3 Undo it with a small punch or chisel by tapping it round with a hammer, but don't tell anyone I told you to do it!

All methods will require a new screw after.

If all else fails you will have to drill it out, best done by removing the primary cover and going in from the back because you will be drilling the right direction for un-doing the screw and it most likely will come out as you are drilling it.

Re: Torx/Hex bits

Cheers, SJC - I'll try those methods in the order you listed them.
