I do use earplugs £3 for 30 sets on ebay.

Phoned my local hospital, yes they do make ear plugs. How much says I.

Them "Oh we havn't got a system in place to invoice you for them"
Me "But you do make them and there is no charge"
Them "Yes, just get a referral letter from your GP and we will make you an appointment"

Result, letter goes in on Monday. As they are free gawd knows what I'll end up with, probably two wooden wedges, but I will keep you posted, and if they are the puppies privates give you the address of the hospital.

Most hospitals have an ENT Dept. That's all you have to do, get an appointment with your GP, hopefully he will give you a referral letter. Explain that you are getting a ringing in your ears, tell him/her that you are a biker.

Got a pair of plugs made up at the bike show in Edinburgh a couple of years ago, my tinnitus seems to have got worse tho', don't wear them all the time.

Re: Hearing Protection

I've been bothered with tinnitus for years and it gives me gip on and off,the build up of wax I seem to be prone to makes it worse and wearing earplugs pushed into yer lug holes forces the wax deeper making it even worse
Noise damage to your ears happens over a period of time but your ears and hearing can be permanently damaged by loud sustained noise i.e. loud music either at a live gig or headphones machinery noise in factories etc.wind noise also.

Of course loud pipes on yer harley do not cause any damage whatsoever.

However I do tend to get a very painful bottom jaw caused by the permanent huge grin from ear to ear ;)

Re: Hearing Protection

Hi Guys,

For what its worth, I don't think it matters if its in a work scenario or not I think we should protect our hearing, it would be a sadder world without it!!

I use chainsaws, sawbenches, all sorts of noisy kit at work, and before they told us to wear proper PPE kit to protect our ears, I think untold damage was done, I am sure that there are a lot of other guys and girls out there who would tell the same story ! I wear the kit now to limit any further damage.

Noise and its volume (in Decibels dB's ) is logarithmically incremental, that means that each time it notches up a number, it gets TWICE (almost) as loud ! I believe the HSE limit is around 85 dB's before you have to wear hearing PPE. I have looked on the HSE site at noise levels and there are some indications of these there, they make interesting reading, and bear ouit the logarithmic nature of the curve on dB's

I do not really know if anyone has tested the noise produced on a harley whilst being ridden at (any) speed, it would be interesting. All I know is that after a long day out I don't think my ears are that good! So I try and wear those little green or blue or yellow plugs when I remember, and it does make a difference, I can still hear the bike, its still great, but it doesn't hurt ! ! !

I know it comes down to individual choice, and I'm not trying to be a nanny or a granny, but having had temporary deafness in one ear, it is a right bas***d.

Anyway I like the idea of visiting teh Audiology Dept of your local MRSA outlet, and getting kitted out with plugs. Surely its better to support your local unit, than increase someone elses profit???

There it is for what its worth.
Ride Safe.

Re: Hearing Protection

When I was instructing in the T.C; the metalwork & woodwork trades instructors had to have a hearing test every year and we were issued with soft plastic earplugs. I soon found out that to use them on the bikes was very beneficial, cuts out a lot of unwanted sound, especially wind noise and when I go to a rally, I bung 'em in and the heaviest of rock bands is brought down to an acceptable level, I can also still hear people talking around me.
I fear for this generation who drive around with bomp-tooty-bomp music playing out of their motors, cos they'll know all about it in years to come!
