You can't tell by looking at it: you have to slacken the lock nuts, use the special tool (cheap) and find out if it's wound in, out or in between the two (which is where I put it). Like I say, fully laden, two-up, and it's never bottomed out at the back on that setting, and that includes several hundred miles in Ireland, where the potholes were... Following for a 2003 FXST:

Widbill - took a Custom out for the morning - struggled to get it to touch down - very very impressed with ride quality - my only concern is the angle your hands take on the grips - in traffic a lot of pressure on the left wrist. Before you say it - yes that wrist has not had the same amount of excercise as the right!!!!! ![]() ![]() |

Had the same problem the other year keep the fat boy or buy a bagger. In the end hired one in the states and did 2500 miles in two weeks in northern california.the rk went up some roads i'd struggle to get a sportsbike up never mind a softail.never ground down once and even the wife who rides a dyna was inpressed with the handling. You can do big miles on a softail we went to the chech supper rally but i found 300 + miles a day hard work. But in the end bought a rk standard as said by others the bags aren't as big as the look but I've bought some lid haulers which helps alot. Well I did 320 miles to get upto Lancs and I was surprised how easy it was. I did 150 miles to the first stop, and one more stop before i reached my destination. Took 5 hours. BUT I still want a RK, just want to keep the Train as well

Train or RK for touring? No contest. My riding Mate, Clive, had a crash in Greece while we were at the Super Rally. Broke his collar bone. He still rode his King back to England. You need a smooth comfy bike to do that.

Just got back from Lancs, this time did thye 320 miles with only one stop just long enough to get fuel. It was pissing it down on the way home, and the bike was as solid as a rock even in driving rain at 70mph. My conclusion is that for me, around 300 miles is about the limit for non-stop (well only for fuel) trip. So if I really want to hit the continent seriously I dont think the Train is the tool for the job. Oh and I wore my new back support for both the trips and it made a real difference to me. Back pain wasnt an issue, and the LePera gel seat stopped numb bum until I hit about 250 miles. Oh and if you can get there the Lakes and the National Parks have some great roads and scenery. Honniston Pass by the slate works is a beautiful road, as is the route to Hawes via Dent from Kirby Lonsdale. Hard Knot Pass is something else, talk about steep.

Bill, I have a 2000FLSTC,and rode 30.000 in the first two years two up for the most of the time, the last long ride for me was last summer when I rode from my house in Spain to the OZ Rally. I have the original seat gel treated by Smartass seats in Yorkshire, who did a great job, my suspension is tightened down to max, and I run Metzler tyres. But regularly ground out the bike two up, boards and tranny case, and tip the pipes. I am also the same height as BaZa & Simon, but heavier O.K. O.K fatter. I extended the boards, gearlinkage & brake pedal, and the bike is a tad too short still on long runs. Big_john Spain ;)
