Re: Securing a Harley/Sportster

Park on side stand put it in service mode so alarm does not go off. BUT put the alarm BACK on if leaving the van for a meal or overnight parking.

Strap it down as you would on a ferry protect the seat and put the ratchet strap over the seat while compressing the bike down ie sit on it and ratchet it up tight. I also leave mine in gear if you want use another strap wherever you think you could use it.

Also around the back and front wheel helps.

Why Tim are you expecting rain at the next meet?...LOL

Re: Securing a Harley/Sportster

What he said but I would put ratchet straps around each fork stanchion (above the bottom yolk) and tie off in the corner of the van. Compress the suspension with the straps. I would then use another strap around the rear wheel to brace against the front straps. Leave it in gear. Don't go around bends on two wheels in the van and you should be alright

Re: Securing a Harley/Sportster

Don't compress the suspension fully with the ratchet straps, leave a little movement. Good mate of mine had troubles with seals after the AA ratchetted everything tight.

Re: Securing a Harley/Sportster

Done 1000's of miles with my Sportster in the back of my Transit, towing a c/van around France.Never moved once even under sharp cornering and braking.
Bike on stand, strap around left fork leg to bottom of passenger seat anchorage on van.Another strap around rear shock to floor anchor just inside back door.Leave bike in gear.the only way the bike can move is sideways so put a block of 3"x2" between the foot of the stand and van w/arch.
And if you've got anything big'n bulky in the van padlock it to that.I had a 2kva genny chained to the bike.
Job done
If you place the strap on the bike low enough you don't have to worry about compressing the suspension or putting a strap over the seat like you would with a trailer
