Cool Time to buy?

Happy xmas all.

As you may have guessed, i'm new to the club. I am currently looking for my first HD, having given up jap bikes a few years ago.

Dunno if I should go for a sportster (1990 onwards) or something older and bigger on account of being a fat barsteward... Trouble is, the max I can afford is around £5K, which looking around doesn't seem to offer a massive choice (although I did see a nice looking FX-R go cheap on ebay the other day) Whatdya think?

Re: Time to buy?

Hi BW,

There seems to be a glut of good quality used Sportsters at great prices and I personally know of two 2003 883s that were sold this year for £2.3k & £2.8k. That is fantastic value.

I have also seen several 2003 1200s for around £4,700. It is a case of having the money ready and acting quickly when the right bike comes along.

As far as bigger metal is concerned, it is definitely possible to get an Evo 1340 Big Twin (1984 - 1999) for under £6k, but you do have to be in the right place at the right time. I have seen a couple sold on ebay for around £4,500.

Cautionary note: I know of one purchaser who got an Evo Tour Glide off ebay for around £2.3k. After purchase it failed its MOT due to excessive frame rust so it didn't look like such a bargain.

Condition is everything and is much more important than age. Note that anything under 30,000 miles is considered to be low mileage, as long as there is some documented service history. Good Luck!

Ming,

Thanks for the advice, reckon a Sportster 1200C is probably safest bet, although a Big Twin would do nicely (A Road King for example;) ), but as you say, its a case of being in the right place at the right time with a pocket full of cash;)

Sal, I'm in Northamptonshire. A 1200C eh? That wouldn't be yours by any chance? Is that one careful owner?

Re: Time to buy?

look at the small advts. Bike Trader. this site.

You *WILL** get a late 1980s/early 1990s Big Twin for that money right now.

Older is cooler

And they are great bikes.

Start hunting!!

Re: Time to buy?

..Nice looking bike that Dave!..wonder what the miles are?

If you see something in your area or online come on and ask about it, these guys know there stuff and someone might easily know the bike or may come along with you to view.

Good luck!
