Re: A dealer's perspective - life at Oxford H-D

no one laughs at the stealerships and related crap more than I do.

But....i think you need to read the thread a little more closely.

Credit where it is due.....we can all slag them off. Let's hear from one of them!

For instance, you have already learned that there's a mechanic at this dealership who speaks Shovel. If I were living anywhere near and in the poop with an FX/FLH, I would regard that as valuable info. Some indies do not!

Relax, man....

Re: A dealer's perspective - life at Oxford H-D

Certainly is good to see a Dealership pop their head above the parapet, hopefully it's more than an advertising scam.

Given that what I read on this thread sounds promising, then I would be more likely to give Oxford a try if and when I come to buy a new bike.

Thats far more than I could say for the local dealerships, who like some others have said, couldn't give a flying whatsit once you've done the deal.

Re: A dealer's perspective - life at Oxford H-D

Below is the first post I ever put on this Forum in another thread, and to those who haven't seen it before, I hope it'll help you understand why I'm here.

Is my presence on this Forum about attracting new customers? Partly yes, of course it is. I wouldn't insult anyone's intelligence by suggesting otherwise. It's also about trying to give you guys an insight into what we do, why we do it, and how difficult and/or frustrating it can sometimes be. It's about burying a few myths, e.g. that HOG membership brings a right to special discounts, and clearing up potential misunderstandings, e.g. that H-D have the final say on warranty claims, not the dealers.

It's also about finding out why a specific group of Harley owners seem to have issues with the brand's official dealer network. If I can fix some of those issues at this dealership, it'll be a benefit to the store, but a benefit to you guys too.

Anyway, if the thread gets deleted or locked, I'll take the hint and disappear quietly off into the distance!

Cheers

John

I've been reading this thread, and to a certain extent, it's not great reading for someone like me. To discover that so many posting on here have a beef with H-D dealers in general, and one or two with my dealership in particular, is more than a bit worrying.

I can only try to deal with the comments made about Oxford H-D, but what I'm not going to do is make outlandish claims or promises that we're going to be the biggest, the best, the cheapest or perfect 100% of the time. We're all human, and sometimes we will get it wrong. All we can do is strive to do the best job we can, and when it does go wrong, pull out all the stops to put it right.

There's a lot of change going on at Oxford H-D since our new owner's arrival. We've been given the resources we need to improve the way we do things, and to recruit 2 or 3 new key members of staff, the first of which has been on board for a while. (I can also tell you our MD is a big Harley fan, and owned a number of them before he bought our dealership. Also, and very unusually, when he does decide he fancies a new bike, he does actually buy it, and doesn't run it on the Company.) The few changes we've made already are starting to pay dividends by way of our seeing customers coming back to us who had good reason to be critical in the past. We've made a start, but there's a way to go yet.

The only other point I'd make is that we do this for a living. I'll never apologise for making an honest profit, but what all the staff here have been briefed to do is to give the customer a deal that is fair to both them and to us. We all know there are ways to buy almost anything very cheaply if you want to buy on-line. There's absolutely nothing we can do about that, but hopefully, as we drag Oxford H-D kicking and screaming to new levels, you guys might decide that if we're not the absolute cheapest, we do at least represent good value, and try to deliver a good service.

To the poster who said he'd rather drive a nail through his soft bits than come here again, all I'll ask you is to keep your ear to the ground, and if you hear any better news about us, maybe give us another try.

Sometimes there's a distinct advantage to having been around for a few years. I began my motor trade career back in 1979, and some of my mentors were of the Old School. The wisest of them all was a great guy called Gil who was my Sales Manager when I first switched to the car world. He gave me two sound pieces of advice, which I've always remembered:

1: A salesman will sell a customer his first car/bike, but the After-Sales Depts will sell him all his others.

2: Don't poke the payroll.

John

Best bit of advice I was ever given too.
