| USA Trip Can anyone suggest a good company to provide a guided tour package for the states? We're hoping to do the Route 66 thing or something else along those lines next year and would like to find a reliable and affordable travel firm to go through. Information about any experiences would be greatly appreciated. ![]() |

| Re: USA Trip Hi yer I moved your thread into here because in your own region asking there you are limited to the number of people responding. Not everyone looks in other peoples regions. Boogiefool is the man to ask as he has done it and is doing it again next year. Click on his name above and send him a pm. ![]() ![]() We've all seen the movies; we've all heard of the Great American Drive – the irresistible lure of the open road and finding your fortune on the way to California. So pack your bags, hire a fancy car and head into the wilds for a trip down some of the USA's most famous roads... 1. Route 66 Why so special? Arguably the most famous of US highways, the historic Route 66 is close to 2,400 miles long and stretches across eight states from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California. As the old two-lane highway has long since been superseded by high-speed four-lane interstate highways, Route 66 has been erased from official maps. However, you can still buy a Route 66 map that will help you pick up the trail, which is still 85 per cent intact. Famous for: During the depression, Route 66 was the only artery linking Chicago and Los Angeles; therefore the highway was used by poor unfortunates desperate to escape the dust bowl and seek a better life in California. These hard times are also highlighted in Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning epic The Grapes Of Wrath, and today, countless songs of lore such as Nat King Cole’s Route 66 symbolise its reputation as a ‘road to opportunity’. Don't miss: Crossing Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, expect ghost towns, long-forgotten gas stations, neon-signed diners and wild, flat prairie landscape. Stop along the way to experience the world-famous ‘motel’ at its finest, as well as diners galore. Stop off in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a browse around the restored 18th-century OldTown village. Getting there: Traditionally driven from east to west, fly to Chicago and hire a Harley-Davidson. Click on this logo to see hire information. ![]() |
