Lands End to John O Groats Help / advise

A little help advise needed please

As part of my modest “bucket list” (no I am not planning on going anywhere permanent just yet I hope) I have always wanted to do Land’s End to John o Groats, not for charity or to set records in covering the distance or in the shortest time etc just to do it.

The furthest West I have been is Minehead and the furthest North is Inverness. I want to allow a week to get up there and back. My questions is B and B’s Hotels people can recommend near Lands End and John o Groats. The second question is the best route through Scotland (Jockoland).

I want to miss the City’s centres out and as many motorway miles as possible planning to do the trip in July, August or September not certain on dates yet.. Hope to see some of the sights on the way.

I know it not a tour across the Sates or Europe but this has been a itch for a good few years for me.

If you look back at the Ride for Life threads over the last few years you will see the route the guys here did it. pm essjay and kendo they will still have the routes.
A google search is also helpful.

Thanks Baza

I will look back into the Ride for life threads and gleam as much as possible and will pm essjay and Kendo.

Yes I had done the Goggle search did not find it too helpful mainly for Walkers or cyclists. They tend to tent it or youth Hostel it I try to avoid tenting it when doing solo trips.

I will investigate further.

Wizz up to JoG as quick as you can ,then spend the rest of your time cruising around Scotland.Go from JoG ,across the top of Jocko land ,then down the west side taking in Applecross pass, you won't regret the time spent doing this ride.
Maybe even get to see the infamous D t M on your way down the West side

Good luck

Re: Lands End to John O Groats Help / advise

Hi,

I've done the Land's end to John 'o' Groats thing a few times. Once you've done it you'll want to do it again, especially as the scenery in the Highlands is brill. Last time I did it was in July 07 when 5 of us rode together from Land's End to JoG in the same day to raise money for a Children's Hospice.

In JoG itself I would recommend the Seaview Hotel, good bar, good food and only 100yds from the JoG start/finish.

There is a camp site but it's very windswept.

One thing I would recommend on a Harley, if you're going north of Inverness, is to fill up at every opportunity.

It's a lot better than it was (BIG Tesco in Wick now) 20 years ago when I did the trip on a Honda XBR500.

You'll have a fabulous trip, good luck.

I've got a similar desire but would want to incorperate some distilery visits, in particular to go to the Isle Of Islay by ferry to port ellen and go to the finest home of whisky that is Bowmore. keep on theatening to do but haven't done it yet, don't know whats stopping me..... just need a few days of work and a roll of notes in my sky rocket.

Just a thought - if you are doing the ride anyway - is there anyone who would sponsor you (work colleagues?) for a local charity....

Re: Lands End to John O Groats Help / advise

Yo dude,

Did it with Sam (Silent One) and Preach - we wanted to do it straight through from top to bottom and managed 14 hours 15 mins. That's a steady 80 and with a splash and dash at petrol stations.

If you have the time go up through Glencoe, Rannoch Moor, Fort William and Fort Augustus. The roads are wild and great and aroung Loch Ness twisty and great.

On the way down try the A9 through Aviemore.

If you can stick to the west coast like the other dudes have mentioned, Ullapool and upto Durness and Cape Wraith are long single track roads surrounded by magical mountains. At the top of the mainland is a village called Tongue - man all roads in and out are beautiful.

We stopped at the Seaview in JOG and Penzance - plenty of cheap B and B's there.

Try it you'll love it. Even better are the Western Isles - the Outer Hebrides are easy via Cal Mac ferries. White sandy beaches, mountains, turquoise green sea and lovely folk...........
