MOT discs display?

For the last few weeks I've been puzzled by the number of tax disc holders I've sent to customers in Northern Ireland - often purchased in pairs.

Just learnt why this is. Motorcycles (and presumably cars also) now have to display a disc showing when the MOT expires as well as a tax disc! I suppose some civil servant thought this a good idea for no reason other than he could order it. How about another for insurance? I believe they have to display three discs in the Republic already.

The worrying thing is that changes seem to be trialled in NI before being introduced here (eg online tax disc renewel). I notice the present MOT cert. is thoughtfully provided with a small tear out sticky "reminder" giving reg. no. and date of expiry - perhaps that is where the disc is printed.

However for now every cloud has a chromium plated lining and I'll just keep the postie busy

Re: MOT discs display?

When you tax online, it pulls up the information about insurance and MOT from other databases. So all is required is a newly designed tax disc with this info on. Even if one expires before another...it can still display it.
This must be for the convienience of traffic wardens...bast@rds!!!

Re: MOT discs display?

I agree that they do a good job of catching people breaking traffic laws, but try and drive or park anywhere here in Cambridge...they go over the top with their authority.

sorry Brian but I suddenly realised this was in the Technical section and I had promised myself that I wouldn't post in there again, hence the "I must not post in the Technical Section" for the reason to delete it.

Re: MOT discs display?

Because it's just another annoying, totally uneccesary piece of legislation that we have managed without perfectly well up to now. If it hadn't been MOT'd, it wouldn't have a tax disc + the info. is now all on computer and can be accessed by entering the registration number anyway.

Re: MOT discs display?

Greg has a valid point. You cant tax your vehicle now without a current MOT or current insurance and these are checked via an online database so why bother having to display them?

just more shit for us all to have to worry about

next they will be charging us all a ficver each more for each service because they have to product a sticky disc to display it and it goes on

and on
and on

Don't overlook the fact that to obtain a Tax disc you only need to have Insurance and a current MOT at that time. Without access to the PNC system, and I'm assuming that most of the "new" traffic wardens won't, there is no way to tell whether a vehicle has a valid MOT and Insurance despite displaying a current Tax Disc.

In my opinion anything that reduces the number of illegal vehicles on the road (and increases the number of bikes I can MOT) is a good thing.
