| Any recommended products for waterproofing leather?
The British summer is taking the perverbial again and having been caught out in a thunderstorm on Saturday with basically only leathers on, the flood of water that soaked thru to my arms and chest left me in puddles when I eventually got home. I find wearing lots of layers including 'wets' just makes the riding feel more isolated and you exercise less control thru the layers at a time when you should be more in control due to the prevailing adverse road and weather conditions. Does anyone have any recommendations for products to waterproof leathers to a least hold the rain out for a while? many thanks John

I regularly coat my leathers in 'Dubbin' to waterproof them. You can get it from any army & navy store (in little tins like shoe polish) or outdoor shops, country store that sells horse riding stuff etc |

Neatsfoot oil works for a bit, but only for a brief shower. I get cans of it from a local farm supply shop. Works best after leathers have been left out in the sun (ha!) and the oil has been warmed up. The colder the oil, the less it goes in. Put too much on, and you have to wipe it off, as the leather can and will get filled. My leathers are saturated in the stuff, as are the saddlebags, and you can see the water beading on the saddlebags. However, it doesn't keep the rain out of leather jeans for long, as it comes through the stitching, and before long they're just a cold, wet mass. Also, it smells. I don't mind the smell that much, and it helps you get a free space at the bar, but others may disagree. I agree with your argument about control (and I also remember as a 17 year old feeling almost invincible when stuffed inside all the layers, like it didn't matter if you came off, as you were protected by this big buuble of stuff - a dangerous psychological condition to be in), but here's the counter argument. If you do get cold and wet, you will be far less in control than if you are bagged up in a suit. I got a cheap, unbranded one-piece oversuit for £30, which has done me for 5 years so far. Given the weather we've been having, it's become second nature now...

I use Nikwax but I also have a pair of lightweight waterproof trousers in my tool roll and I'm looking into buying one of those Jonny Jackets that Crotch Rocketeers use. They fold up really small and are 100% waterproof apparently. |
