| Re: Toyota shows Harley how it should be done... Yep, same here in Yorkshire - mostly Land Rover Defenders with Ifor Williams truck tops and the occasional Subaru Estate.

When I was squaddie in Belize in 1978 I wanted to purchase an MGB, Choclate brown exterior and Cream interior, cost about £4500.00 thu NATO cars, duly paid the deposit and anticipated picking the car up in the following November, they even agreed to delivery to Brize Norton (Not a million miles from Abingdon).... everything was going great untill the telex messages began pouring in stating the car would not be ready until the following June.... Tried to cancel the order, all kinds of crap until I called in the Army Legal Services and resolved in hours. Deposit back in Bank account, I was at a loss waht to do I needed a new car and I was posted straight back to Germany after a weeks leave. I saw an advert for Toyota in our Corps magazine. Made a very expensive call to Toyota UK in Croydon and purchased a Toyota 1600 ST, without ever seeing one execpt in a black and white adverts When I eventually got home I went straight to Croydon to pick up the car, I couldnt beleive it, it was beautiful a sort of mini hatchback mustang, it was British Racing Green with a cream leather interior, and everything worked. When they gave me the keys I just sat in the petrol station (free tank) stunned at what I had bought, couldnt believe it was mine I loved it, did 100,00 miles before selling it and then I didnt really want to. Ive had two Honda Accords and I now have a Honda Civic 1,7 VTech coupe, which Ive had from new with 113,000 miles on it, same clutch same exhaust, immaculate and 45+ mpg on a steady run... brilliant car... will not change it unless the wheels drop off...

Last time I was out in Africa (Zimbabwe, 1990)) most of the Farmers/ Landowners had gone for Toyota LandCruisers above Landys, purely because of reliability. The friend we were staying with in the Zambezi valley near Chirundu had two, totally different to ours tho', could be stripped down, top off, windscreen folded down, doors off etc, 4 wheel drive was manually turned front hubs etc. As he said, "nearest town 60 miles away, no AA or RAC, 6,000 acre estate with Lion, Leopard, Elephant around. I want to get back home without breaking down" Landys had a very poor reputation for reliability, and he had a couple of old Mk 2's, but only used within the 600 acre fenced area where they could be easily recovered. Said a lot about British engineering at the time.

| Re: Toyota shows Harley how it should be done... that's in Africa.. ![]() I'm sad to say that Land Rovers have long since lost their reputation for hard work. They are ok for farmers who do about 12 miles a week, or shooting parties who run up and down from the house to the butts, but for hard work in the fierld, no chance. I had a Discovery from the Corus job and it had no end of spares in the time, while the Hiluxes just slogged on - even welders can't break them, which is saying a fair bit
