Digital Technician??????

Hi

Does anyone know of a friendly HD dealer in the region, or even better, soan independant, who has a Harley Davidson tool called a Digital Technician? It can be used to reprogram ECMs on TCs etc

If you do, please let me know, Roy

Re: Digital Technician??????

The stage I'm at is independant HD shops do not have the digital technician tool or anything that can amend more than a few basic values on the ECM, and certainly not download keyfob serial numbers.

So, in trying stealerships - the mechanic at Oxford was helpful on the phone, however I have recent experience of their parts desk which leads me to believe that like a few other stealerships, they won't respond to the letters I have sent to Oxford, Silerstone, Riders and Reading. I tend to find with UK stealerships that unless you want to buy something out of a book or do something that the main company 'approve off' then they are generally not interested. However, thats another bitch for another time.

Having said that, I am now getting a lot of positive comms and moving forward with Shaw HD down near Brighton. They have reasonable labour rates as well (circa £75 a hour inc VAT) so will most likley progress things with them. What I wanted a HD shop to say is while we are not sure, we will give it a go (I'll scope how much labour time I am prepared to buy). Hence Shaw looks favourite.

So, yes, thanks for your email to try independants. I did that and it drew a blank, however having some unexpected luck with a HD shop. One of the things that has really helped is the information Robbie has kindly sourced for me so I have been able to display some knowledge of what I am asking to be done and ask the right questions. Its good being in a club

Cheers Roy

Re: Digital Technician??????

You need the Screaming Eagle Race Tuner (SERT).

Why do you think you need one? There are other options

Re: Digital Technician??????

Hello

HD dealerships will mostly have a digital technician as a standard part of their workshop. So called grey dealers have similar devices which do not tend to have the full range of features as a DT; ie they will probably only be able to adjust tickover etc where a DT can adjust/tune pretty much anything electronic on your bike (ignition, alarm etc etc).

Hope that helps. Round here the dealership I would probably put most faith in is Oxford as all their mechanics are screaming eagle accredited and generally just seem to know what they are on about. Not sure about Riders in Bristol. Have heard or expereinced non-motivating things about other HD local dealerships.

Cheers, Roy

Re: Digital Technician??????

I ride a softail deuce in Malaysia and until recently we had no dealers in country as they closed down about 5 years ago so we only had the support of a few good local mechanics non of whom had a digital technician what a lot of us have done with fuel injected bikes is get a power commander usb II fitted which allows you to adjust the engine mapping to suit your bike configuration. You can either download a map from their web site that suits the set up of your bike or put your bike on a Dyno and get it mapped to suit your set up if no map exists. If you are going to Dyno it I recommend you do a full service first and also give your jets and injector a good clean first so you get the best set up. I felt a lot more power from the bike and it runs a bit cooler than before. I use two maps one for day to day riding in Kualu Lumpur traffic to and from work and a second when we are off on a long run. Hope this helps - From a Cornish man in Malaysia

Re: Digital Technician??????

Thanks Roulph

Yep, your right for tuning the bike. I had a place in Glocs tune my PCIII on a dyno, there was something like 230 odd settings per cylinder to get the 'perfect fuel curve'. The machines grey dealers have allow them to set the tickover, however for more indepth electronics it tends to need a DT.

Where I came into this was trying to find a digi techician so I could change the alarm on my bike from a standard '06 push button to the '07 smart alarm. Having identified the 2 or 3 simple wiring changes, the alarm fobs needs to be assigned to alarm which can only be done via a DT.

Anyway, that was all back at the beginning of the year. I then went and broke my ankle which, when finally back on the road, also caused me to forget about fitting the smart alarm. Might still do that actually thinking about it, then I will be completely keyless.

Um .... bit of spare time this afternoon ....

Cheers Roy

Re: Digital Technician??????

Sorry Roy, didn't realise you were trying to sort out the security system. Just a quick word of warning about the security fob, a few guys here have the system on bikes bought from the new dealer which only opened a couple of months ago and most have had problems with the security fob. It seems the fob itself is not that waterproof so if you don't put it in a plastic bag in heavy rain water can get in it and really screw you up. We have really heavy monsoon rain here and the showers can come out of nowhere, we never stop as its just too dangerous as visibility is so bad (10 meters) if you pull off the road you are likely to get hit by a truck. Quite often its not the rain but the humidity from wet cloths that gets into them and causes problems. Anyway good luck with the bike and ride safe.

Re: Digital Technician??????

Thanks Roulph

I have a tendancy to assume people know whats going on inside my head so rarely explain myself properly

Will note your obs about the fobs. Although I tend to wear my textiles here most of the year, certainly for commutting to work and then our 'summer' is more of a time where there is warmer rain rather than our winter where the rain is colder

Cheers Roy
