Need some advice - returning to road

After an 8 year lay off (bust my back) I have the Ok to ride and dug my Road King out of the garage - its a 1994 (had it since 96) with stock motor save S&S Carb & Super Trap Pipes. As its been stood for best part of 8 years I need to get it fully overhauled. Looking for a steer as to good places to talk to about having it brought back to life over winter for next spring -- as near York as possible. Any good independants? dealers have all changed since I last rode.

Firstly good luck. Don't know if it is too far but I would trust Hog Doc at Heywood. Just off the M66 via M62.

Ian

Billy's Place in Doncaster (about 1/4 mile up the road from St Legers) if you want to ride down there or need directions PM me, I'm near Bubwith south of York. He's a good bloke and will be happy to let you help out with the job.

Good advice given about getting the bike ready for the road again but what about the rider. A refresher course with a training school or road safety partnership would help to take the rust off and prepare you for the years ahead.

Billy's or Polar are good, as for refresher courses look here LRSP Home - Lincolnshire County Council - we're trying to get a group together on the harley front so pm me if you're interested although it's a bit of an early start but we might be able to sort some accomodation in the Horncastle area.

Re: Need some advice - returning to road

Source some new tyres for the bike maybe you can get them cheaper than whoever you take the bike to for the heavy service?

Look in our Suppliers section. Are you up to changing the oils yourself it is not that hard a job?

If you could do some of the work over the months not only will it be satisfying for you but it will spread the cost out and you only have to ask to be done what you have not achieved.

Personally I would make another thread in Evo Big Twins (1984 -1999) section asking advice as to what should be done to your bike after an 8 year rest/storage in your garage.

As far as retraining you know yourself how much experience you had before your lay off. Many new riders in their 40/50's have not ridden since they were 16 and that was on 50-125cc bikes so it may be worth a day out at least to brush up on techniques.

Whatever good luck and I am pleased you are fully recovered. You are in a good area there to meet up with some good club members.
