Is this a very clever scam?

I received an email thus morning which looks to be an invoice from a company (Redland) I have never dealt with telling me I owe them a substantial amount of money for buying something from another company (Rugged Systems) I have also never dealt with. They provided a link for immediate payment. The only Redland I can find is a site for a parish church and there look to be at least a couple of real businesses called Rugged Systems. As I have said above, I have never had dealings with either of these companies. To me, this looks to be a very clever scam because the email was addressed to me personally (not a round robin) and they also obviously know my home address.Obviously I have not paid anything but any ideas on what to do next? Contact my service provider maybe?

Hi Donald. Yes, the 'false' invoice technique is indeed a common scam, working on the basis that the curiosity of the recipient will make them click on the link, which you would be ill-advised to do. I get them at work regularly and our IT dudes always advise not to click on the link.

DON'T click on the link.If it seems dodgy it usually is. I get at least one email a week saying I am owed refunds, have unpaid invoices with companies I have never heard of, all requiring me to download a file of click on a link.

Thought it was a scam but a very convincing one, very clever, but there was no contact phone number nor address and the email address was not a link. The only link is the payment one so this is getting deleted. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Is this a very clever scam?

Scams are getting more and more sophisticated. My buddy nearly got caught trying to sell a car. Had an inquiry form a guy with a legit UK name and email address. Language in the email seemed a but non-native English but he had a traditional English name. He was a builder so tracked his mobile number from a business advert and called him. Turned out his email had been hacked and someone was trying to buy stuff using his identity. It all came down to that one little thing that seems out of place.

I get these all the time from places I've never heard of, usually the 'invoice' is an attachment which is a .zip. If yours was like this I really hope you did not open that zip file!

Re: Is this a very clever scam?

Generally all the scams and unwanted emails go in my junk folder on my Apple iMac but just occasionally one slips through the net and finds its way into my inbox! If it looks like crap and smells like crap then you can be damn sure it is crap! If the senders address doesn't finish in .co.uk or .com ... and be mindful of the @(whatever).com then the likelihood of it being a scam email doubles!
Of the three scam/crap emails I've had today, one is a gmail (mrpeter84campos@gmail.com) one originates from India (mailer@deliverteam.in.net) and the other is a scam quiz from I don't know where (quizz@dailyquizz.com) LOL

This email below is from the Rev. John Anderson who is a man of God so for this reason only I'm inclined to believe everything he says and it's got nothing to do with the part regarding the $6,000,000 LOL
    Kind Attention:

My name is Rev. John Anderson; I am a US citizen, 51 Years Old. My
residential address is as follows. 5424 Pent ridge Street
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19143-4126, United States of America, I am
one of those people that took part in receiving Inheritance funds and
Lottery funds from African banks and European banks even from many
lottery organizers few years ago and they refused to pay me, I had
paid different fees or charges of over $85,000 while in the USA trying
to get my funds from those banks and lottery organizers but all to no
avail. So i decided to travel to WASHINGTON D.C USA with all my
payment approval documents, and I was directed by the F.B.I. Director
to contact a man called Mr. Peter Campos, A BRITISH CITIZEN and a
member of the UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION (UNO) & INTERNATIONAL
MONETARY FUNDS (IMF) COMPENSATION AWARD COMMITTEE currently staying in
Lagos Nigeria. I contacted him in Lagos Nigeria and he explained
    everything to me.

Mr. Peter Campos personally directed me on how to successfully claim
my Inheritance and Lottery payment from the paying bank and right now
I am the happiest man on earth because I have now finally received my
funds totaling US$ 6 Million (Six Million U.S Dollars). Moreover Mr.
Peter Campos, showed me the full information of those people that are
yet to receive their payments and I saw your names/your email address
as one of the beneficiaries and that is why I decided to email you to
stop dealing with those people because they are not with your funds
but they are only making money out of you.

I will personally advise you to contact Mr. Peter Campos in Lagos
Nigeria immediately after reading this message. You have to
contact him directly on this information below:

    Contact Person: Mr. Peter Campos
Contact Address: No. 285 Griffiths Drive Wolverhampton Lagos Nigeria
    eMail ID: mrpeter84campos@gmail.com
    Telephone Number: +234-8037600764

Contact him now and send him

    (1). Your full names,
    (2). Your fullcontact Address,
    (3). Your mobile phone numbers
(4). Your Age and Occupation Etc...

You really have to stop dealing with those people that are contacting
you now telling you that your funds is with them because your funds is
not in anyway with them, they are only taking advantage of you and
they will dry you up until you have nothing left with you. Once again
stop contacting those people, I will advise you to contact only Mr.
Peter Campos in United - Kingdom so that he can help you process your
payment through the paying bank instead of dealing with those liars
that will be turning you around asking for different kind of
money for fees to complete your transaction.

    Thank You and Be Blessed.
