    Looking for some advice please?

Seeking some help please? Just returned from a short trip to Belgium/France. Have 2014 Ultra Limited.

I think this might be just a coincidence but I put in half a tank of fuel to fill it up in France this morning. Within a couple of miles, I noticed a noise that sounded like the shaking a tin of nails coming from the front cylinder when I throttled above about 3000 rpm in any gear. If I kept below this there was no noise and the bike appeared to run okay. My mate riding behind me said he could smell fumes which was not there before the petrol stop. Arrived home okay and other then a couple of times at Calais when I thought the bike might not start we were all good, providing I kept the revs low. Oil pressure showed okay and I have liquid in the coolant system.

If anyone has any thoughts that would be greatly appreciated before I book it into the dealership to have a look. Cheers.

OK, I know you're not stupid, but could you have topped up with diesel by accident? OK then, I'd drain the tank & put some fresh fuel in before owt else, foreign fuel can be dodgy at times. HTH.

    Was it smoking???
As above. Drain tank and refill with fresh fuel.

Thank you both for a prompt reply. It was definitely marked petrol with a Green nozzle. It was not smoking at all. The bike seemed to have full power providing I did not go above 2500 - 3000 rpm to avoid the clattering noise.

Could it be pre ignition caused by crappy fuel? Never had it on a bike but years ago on carbed cars we could get it. Sounds just like that bag of nails too.

Check your engine oil level & drain the gas tank & put some fresh fuel in. I'm not entirely sure, but I think they have a higher level of ethanol in their fuel, which won't help the situation when coupled with the high temps we're getting lately. Hope it's OK, Hal.

Thanks Rob, Tim and Tom. I will drain the tank. It was an extremely hot weekend and I guess this is an easy thing to do and see if it solves the problem. Thanks again.

Just got back last week and the 95 octane fuel over there is mostly E10 so most I was with were using the 98. I'm tight so didn't bother. Plus Ethanol burns cooler than petrol. Hope you get sorted. We lost a Victory and a Fat Bob while we were away and it don't half put a dampener on a trip.

I had a similar problem on my sporty this year, I asked on the forum and was advised to put in fresh fuel that did sort things.
The bike seemed to back fire and run very poorly.
