    Newbie soon to be owner

    Hi all,
I'm a soon to be owner of a Harley '48. I want to change the stock pipe and in particular like the sound of something loud like V&H short shots. I also want to put a pillion seat/pad on it.

Wondering what people's experiences are on short shots and whether there are any alternatives without breaking the bank. Same thing for pillion seats - the Harley ones seem a bit crazy on price and wondering what others have done.

    Thanks!

Remember that the louder the exhaust, the more tedious and tiring a long ride will be...

    Just my 2 cents.

Back in the day (sorry!), we used to spike our mufflers...

Is this even possible, in these politically correct times...?

    Short Shots are loud.

V&H also sell quiet baffles, but to be honest you would need a sound meter to tell the difference.

Your neighbours will love them and they will know exactly what time you left and returned home. Also their car alarms if you go by close enough. Multi story cars parks were a hoot when I had these on a Sportie.

As said above, on long journeys they became a pain and if you use intercoms for your pillion, you will hear the noise in stereo.

That said, I liked them and travelled all over France with them as there is no way anyone could ever say they never heard you coming.

For pillion seats, check EBay for any deals of 2nd hand seats initially.

If no joy there, have a look on Amazon HERE or

Sorry to appear to be a kill joy, but the days of really excessive noise being tolerated is coming to a close, for all the reasons already stated, not forgetting the roadside noise meters being rolled out later this year. Why not consider V&H slip-ons, they will provide the familiar Harley rumble, without drawing too much attention?

Go to some meetings or rallies and ask riders about seats ..... I had a La Pera on my Sportster, looked cool as f*ck, but gave me cramp in my thighs and a maximum riding distance of about 120 miles.

Swapped it for a big comfy cushion after a couple of months.

Thanks all. Useful feedback. Still getting used to how expensive some of the Harley upgrades are! I think I'm set on the short shots (no neighbours to worry about and I'll take my chance with noise levels) but I'm going to defer the seat pad decision until I've looked around a bit.

Short shots look fab, although common but have a major problem with the bracket cracking. It's a pita to get it back off and get it welded.
I found the Q baffles allow bike to run better with filter and tuner as it gives a bit of back pressure. They are better for throttle open.
And they are tiring on a good run to the ears. Look at cobra 909 also
