    48 FL pushrod/cam follower adjustment

    Hi Guys

This 48 I'm restoring has solid push rods and solid cam followers, with the adjustment cup/locking nut between the two, as opposed to the hydraulic ones referred to in the service book. Internet searches reveal that the clearance should be zero, with a cold engine, ie the recommendation is that you set the adjustment to be just tight (you can just turn the pushrod with your fingers) when the valve is fully closed.

This doesn't seem right as it offers no allowance for the engine warming up.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Greg

Are you certain you have solid lifters... As I recall earliest Pans had hydraulic lifter at the TOP of the pushrod???

If you definitely have solids, set fully closed valve with zero up / down movement on totally cold engine.

Similar to Ironhead Sportsters then; when set correctly, you should be able to spin the pushrods easily.
    Much less involved.....

ID:	31675the I half remembered early Pan setup... Yours originally had hydraulic Pushrod. Pls check very carefully for setup before adjusting. Consequences of getting it wrong are pretty dire.... No offence intended.

thanks for your prompt replies, yes they are all solid, pushrods and lifters, as I had to remove them all to check, zero clearance then, thanks

The first top of rod lifters didn't work properly, no sane person would put them back - assuming you could find any. The warm up is what gives you your clearance, the expansion of the cylinder and head will release play.
