    Insurance Renewal Ripoff

Just received my insurance renewal from Bennetts... £470. That’s an increase of £200 from last year! Are they taking the p*ss.. I went on comparison website and got much better rates but I’ve never heard of some of the companies.

What do you guys think?.. Has anyone even heard of Grove and Dean? Not to be mistaken for Torvil and Dean! :-). Anyone know if Bikesure have stopped using Markerstudy (see below).

GROVE & DEAN.... £136 with £450 excess. Includes legal assistance, breakdown, protected NCB

PERFORMANCE DIRECT... £175. Excess and includes are same as Grove & Dean, which is not surprising as it says on their website they’re a trading name of Grove & Dean!

MCE....£188 with £2000 excess!! Includes legal assistance, helmet & leathers, NCB protection. But NO Breakdown cover.

BIKESURE... £251 with £450 excess. Includes legal assistance, breakdown, protected NCB, helmet and leathers cover.
**Bikesure is a trading name of Adrian Flux*

I was with Bikesure before changing to Bennetts about 3yrs ago. The reason I changed was because the policy was underwritten by Markerstudy who are a very poor (check the reviews) company with many complaints. I only found out when I received the policy documents after paying for the year up front.

Markerstudy made crazy demands which weren’t specified up front like my bike having to be chained down to an anchor point in my locked brick built garage overnight. No cover at home if the bike was left on my driveway even whilst I was in house. The bike must be chained up whenever left unattended in a car park etc. (I’m not carrying a big chain around with me) surely a disc-lock should suffice, but oh no, not good enough for them. Then the final straw, in addition to all this they wanted me to have a tracker fitted, so I gave up with them. Might as well have bought more expensive insurance!

    Re: Insurance Renewal Ripoff

The Auto renewal process is there to catch out those that don't review the notice to renew letter, hence the premiums are always inflated.

Call them and state you have the renewal letter but inflation is only 2% and can they not do better. I do this every year and sometimes you get lucky and the premium even reduces, especially if the bike value has dropped and their system still shows it as the original value from 5yrs ago.

Be careful of unknowns. Watchdog reported a scam going around where insurance is really cheap, only to find the fraudulent broker has entered you in the system as 72 with 20+ years of no claims etc to get your policy down. Guess what......when it comes to making a claim you are not covered as the information on your policy is incorrect. If you have Catch Up/iPlayer look it up. It was this weeks programme.

Yes, they think people are either stupid or too busy to notice. I’ll contact Bennetts as you suggest, just to see what they say. Whenever I’ve done this with other companies before though, they always say they can’t match cheaper quotes. (I’ve got to do a similar thing with my BT broadband, but doubt I’ll get it reduced from around £50/month).

I’d like to know who Grove & Dean insurance are though?? Their name is cropping up on comparison sites yet I’ve never heard of them before.

A mate of mine just goes for whoever is cheapest.. He says he’s legally insured and even if they’re slow to act or get bad reviews, they’ve still got to pay out in an accident etc.

Performance Direct (another Grove & Dean trading name) will insure for only £119 if I don’t want breakdown cover, but I prefer to have it. Breakdown insurance is yet another minefield.

Thanks for the tip about Watchdog.. I’ll check it out on iplayer.

I get breakdown cover for bikes, car & caravan through RAC. Works out cheaper. May change to different supplier this year. Also never get legal protection- go with these guys https://www.freemotorlegal.co.uk/

    Re: Insurance Renewal Ripoff

Sorry for delay in getting back, had a few problems to deal with.

I watched the watchdog program. The number of scams, the ingenuity and bare faced cheek of the scammers never ceases to amaze me. I wouldn’t buy insurance from someone advertising on instagram or using only a mobile or whatsapp for contact though.

I use well known comparison sites for insurance and energy etc. Even though some names come up that I’ve never heard of, I assume that they must be genuine companies.

Thanks for the tip on freemotorlegal. I thought most only charged a tenner for this anyway.

    Re. breakdown,
I’m with RAC breakdown at the moment. I’ve not needed to call upon their services yet but they certainly do get some bad reviews. It seems people prefer specialist bike services but these are often more expensive.

    Re: Insurance Renewal Ripoff

One must assume that there really is enough overpaid inatentive people around with auto renewal who make it worth the renewal hike game? I ditched several companies when they came up with mad (up to 104%!) renewals until I landed with Principal Insurance who said we don't do that. Over a few years they have kept pretty close each year, only creeping up by about a tenner so far BUT others on here have reported bad post claim experiences with them..? (renewal due in a few weeks, wondering what that will be..)

(BTW, I know Grove & Dean, they make adverts that are shown before films at the cinema.......)

(little update - renewal came in with a £15 rise, will still call them so they don't get tempted. Can't help but be concerned by reports like Vinnys next post...)

    Re: Insurance Renewal Ripoff

My brother was insured with Principal when he got knocked off a couple of years ago. They were shite in the event of a claim. Basically shut up shop as soon as the third party admitted liability. Told him to deal direct with their insurer who obviously tried to fleece him. Good bike solicitor sorted it though.
