    frame number WL45

Ive recently imported WL45 from the states. Can anyone tell me where a frame number can be found . I have read that they dont have one.Im aware of belly numbers, The bike came with a US title though the DVLA are sending SGS to photograph it and confirm their records ?
A friend suggested that they may use a lug casting number but surely that would mean that all imported bikes would have the same frame number - any ideas

From 1930 to 1961 frame numbers were not used the Engine number is also the VIN. Just use the engine number

You heard correct, frame numbers came in for 1970 and yes, indeed, there are a number of machines with the same "frame number" - ZE35T the steering head casting number! As Rog says, the common practise is use the engine number. Years ago we made the DVLA understand this but their limited imagination means that where they acknowledge no frame number they will then issue a huge (typically in the high teens) number for you to have stamped.

Trev, you are right about the lug casting, there are a few 45's about with the same frame number but DVLA have yet to twig to this; either that or they're aware of the situation and choose not to lest it get complex!

I agree with Roger about the engine number, that is common practice. Most inspectors are aware of this situation with old Harleys, there is lots of documented evidence to prove it should questions be asked.
    Much less involved.....

On some WLC's the engine number was stamped on the frame just forward of the auxiliary stop light switch.under the saddle.

Don't forget the WLC's that have the engine number stamped by the British Army on the triangle casting at the seat post or on the right hand frame rail before the side car mount. There is an offical wartime document that instructs what to stamp and where. My 45 is register with the frame number the same as the engine number . It's can be seen under the paint.
