Quite a few of our members who ran coolers in GB would buy or fabricate covers to leave on until a long trip was expected.

I've got oil coolers and thermostats on three bikes - my view is that if its needed the thermostat will kick in and if it's not it wont - comes on most days in the Summer.
If anyone is thinking about fitting one;

I have an oil cooler on the Sturgis, it didn't help at all in the heat of the SFUK rideout. I think that the carb getting too hot tucked in behind the air filter is more of a problem.
I sent you a facebook message regarding your rack question Rod.
IMO it's a no brainer. Given that you might need to cover it in the winter, the extra oil capacity is a net gain.
On a TCam it is almost an essential extra, very noticable improvement, sitting on the oil tank on a softail.
An additional gain with useing an off set filter adaptor is being able to use a longer filter. (even more capacity)

Hard to look cool at my age John! But I am thinking about a trip to the continent and it gets a bit warm down there. Had a look at the price of coolers and they are way too much. Bar getting a used Harley one, I won't bother - just take it easy and change the oil when I get down there. I did think about switching to synthetic, but last time I did that on an old bike it started leaking all over the place.
