Re: 1950 Hydra Glide EL61 Restoration

Thanks, John. I will ask, if I need more pictures.

During the week, when I'm not working on the bike, I can do some research. Many parts of the bike are already chrome plated. I was really not sure to leave them that way or to remove the chrome and get the original look. But I know, I would not be satisfied with chromed parts which came with a different plating from the MoCo. So I will remove all the chrome and now I'm investigating how to parkerize at home. Some parts just need to be polished after the chrome was removed, but the parkerizing process gives me some headache. But this is part of the fun.
Right now I'm creating some tables in Excel (based on the Palmer book), what plating is required for each part. The Palmer book only says "part XY is parkerized", but doesn't mention any part numbers. So I spend my evenings -totally alone (just with a beer as compagnon) in front of my Mac- and search for the part numbers.... A lot of work, but it will make things much easier. When I'm done, I will be happy to share the list, if someone needs it.

    Paul,
definitely not. I will use a correct color for 1950. Based on my investigations on the fenders, original color was red or black. I think, I go for black...

For 1950 it was ruby red, brilliant black or riviera blue and at extra cost metallic green, flight red, azure blue or white. (silver for cops)

Re: 1950 Hydra Glide EL61 Restoration

I know the color options, I'm sleeping wiht the Palmer under my pillow... :-) It will be black, brilliant black.

Yesterday I made a decision. I will not build the engine into a running condition for the test assembly. The engine was in pieces for many years and I do not want to take the risk, that something felt into it or some inner parts are corroded and will cause damage during running. The engine will get a complete job in spring at my favorite rebuilder and I don't need it to run know. Same for the tranny.

Engine is in, transmission also, but I did not made the progress I wanted to. I need to look up many things, which takes time, but I enjoy every minute! The cylinders are 74s but the crankshaft is a 61. The engine will become a real 61 for sure.

The distributor in wrong, I know, I just want to see the bike in complete. I learned, that the distributor need to be installed before the head (...), now I try to find out how to tighten the head bolt behind it. If you look in the tappets, the are original, but chromed (will be removed of course). the orange panit inside is to make sure, these areas will not be plated. Pretty big job to remove this (was there for more than 20 years..)

Current seat is a cheap one, just there to get a complete overview.

    To be cont'd
