    Pushrod won’t fit

I am in the process of converting my 1973 FLH to run S&S solid lifters and adjustable pushrods.

I have installed all pushrods except the rear intake. Even on the base of the cam, the rod will not raise up high enough to clear the ‘cup’. About 3-4mm needed.

So, as I see it my option are:

    1> shorter adj pushrod
2> shorten existing rod, how do I disassemble the rod to mill off what I don’t need?
3> pull the head (not keen)
4> grind out a segment of the lifter for clearance. (Seems inelegant)

I’m also curious why there is insufficient clearance on only one lifter.

I am running the longer pushrods on the exhaust lifters.

The only option is to find out the cause of the problem - pull the head and have a look.

    https://www.hdforums.com/forum/shovelhead/1137481-pushrod-length.html

    68 FLH

some aftermarket sets the 2 intakes are the same length giving 3 different sizes

    shortest - rear intake
next a little longer - front intake
next rear exhaust - longer then both intakes and shorter then the front exhaust
longest of them is the front exhaust

a builders trick is to use one of the old clasped corks with the new one in the center of the front exhaust spring cup to get it to be as tight as the rest once installed

    Time out of mind

Sorry I don't get that bit either! But I think the main point is that the lengths vary and it might be a case of measuring all four as a stating point, before going deeper into the motor.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will come along.

The kit I have uses only 2 lengths of pushrod. I perhaps should have made that a bit more explicit in the first post. Anyway @fast-lane is correct, I should see what is causing the problem, rather than working around the sympton.

Looks like I will be bringing the winter overhaul forward a couple of months.
