    Cam Chain Tensioners

Just acquired a 2001 Dyna Wide Glide and I am wondering whether I have got the original tensioners fitted. Am I right in thinking if I simply take the cam cover off I will be able to see whether the later hydraulic version ones are fitted ?

    Re: Cam Chain Tensioners

I'm sure the seller would have told you if the tensioners had been upgraded. Just pop the cover off and you'll see. The first photo is the stock sprung type ...

    Re: Cam Chain Tensioners

The bike is being delivered some time this week so I'll find out then whether its been done. How difficult is the upgrade to fit if it hasn't been done but more importantly what will it cost (for me to do it) ?

    Re: Cam Chain Tensioners

Just watched a video on Youtube and it looks pretty straight forward, so its just a matter of how much I' m going to get hammered for, unless its already been done of course.

    Re: Cam Chain Tensioners

    hello Dick
i had a dyna replaced the original spring loaded shoes after 30,000mls they were haft worn ,fitted the same again when i sold the bike its was around 85,000mls ,
there are loads of Harleys out there with big milage and no problems with the original set up.
the ones you hear about are a very small percentage ,,
i am not saying the up grade is not a good idea but for most only an expencive up grade .
at the time there was some shoes made i think in Sweden that were a better i did buy some for the shelf just in case , they were just the heads not the complete shoe

    Re: Cam Chain Tensioners

Agree totally with John, yes hyd are better, but keep an eye on the old type and they generally will do the job, the sort of mileage most people do on their bikes it’s not an issue, if they look ok, spend the money on something else, I am a tight arse so don’t like giving my hard earned away, not saying they couldn’t grenade(caveat) but so could a thousand other things, just my ten cents worth. Re: Cam Chain Tensioners

Thanks for the reply. Quite relieved to hear that. If mine turn out to be original I will probably go down that route. If I get the shoes from my local H-D dealer will they be to the original spec or did Harley upgrade the material?

Nope - you're putting the same crap back in there. If my customers want just the pads replaced I use Cyco pads which are a better wearing material ...
