    1994 FXDL Evo 1340 cylinder base gasket

    Can you change the cylinder base gaskets in situ on the bike with engine left in frame.Are James gaskets the way to go or any others recommended.Cheers

    yes you can with a bit of jiggling james gaskets are good try to avoid athena brand and such like through some aftermarket catalogues, check with alex on here (fastlane) as he builds more engines as most and knows the best options as to stock or performance gaskets

    Yes and Yes. Did both mine years ago and used James gaskets throughout, a top end set would be good as you will have everything you need. Buy a factory manual if you haven't already got one. Expensive new but there are plenty of used ones on ebay and there are downloads available.

    Also if you join the club you will more than likely get a good discount from many independents.

    The problem with Evo base gaskets is that the original paper type stick to the base of the cylinder. You can seriously damage the aluminium if you go at it too hard with a scraper. I use soda to blast the remains off nowadays then I replace them with 0.010" steel gaskets. It's also worth using 0.030" steel head gaskets when you put it back together to give yourself a little compression bump ...

    I use Loctite SF7200 for cleaning gasket surfaces along with a plastic scraper. Works pretty good, plenty of ventilation needed.
