    Downpipe bolts shaking loose.

I'm hoping for some advice with a problem thats seriously getting to me! I have a 1999 FXDWG with I bought 18 months ago. It already had an S&S exhaust fitted which I removed when I replaced the cam chain tensioners. Since putting the exhaust back the head pipe bolts continuously vibrate loose. I have replaced two of the studs and all the nuts. I have tried the standard mesh gaskets and now have the much thinner S&S gaskets. It's a real pain in the arse and I've got to the point where I will do whatever it takes to resolve this issue. Any advice very welcome.

There are kits available in the US that consist of locking nuts especially to address this problem but I can't locate them in the UK or find a US dealer willing to mail them overseas.

    Thanks in advance

Main cause is normally some form of stress or poor alignment of the complete system. Header fixings are not designed to support the exhaust, only to snug the gaskets. At least that’s the info I’ve received from experts. Might be worth disassembling and remounting the system to ensure relaxed figment.
    Time out of mind

Yep - along the lines of Rod's answer you need to address the reason why the nuts are coming loose. You'll be replacing them forever if you don't find out why. Rubber engine mounts worn?

I was wondering whether a new exhaust system would be the answer?

Someone at the club suggested worn engine mounts, I'll have to check it out or get it checked out. Then as I said to Rob (twice!!) perhaps try a new exhaust system, what do you think?

Why would you do that? Just find the existing problem ...

You need to undo all the exhaust bolts, clamps and brackets then start with aligning and tightening the headers and work backwards to the mufflers. If you don't do this then the problem will recur or, even worse, parts may crack under stress.
