    Time for a winter update

    Well after a few years of riding my chop it’s time for a winter strip down and rebuild. The list of jobs I’ve got to do is;
    • New 80 spoke wheels
    • Sort out why the suspension really “clunks” when I go over any bump
    • Fit new slim shock absorbers
    • Complete respray
    • Something new on the tank, maybe different flames this time
    • Lift the handlebars up 1”
    • Remove the kick stand wedge
    • Fit replacement rear caliper
    • New renthal rubbers to the grips
    • Extra panel to the side of the rear splash guard

    And maybe add these to the list;
    • New derby cover
    • A bit of gold leafing on the frame
    • New seat covering
    • Ribbed rocker box covers

    Since I completed the bike the 1st time, I resprayed the tank, replacing the gold leaf lettering with some flames. In the last 5 years or so, the rear wheel has blistered really badly. I’ve spoken to quite a few different companies to see if anything can be done with it but nobody could help. The other problem I’ve had is the rear suspension. The rear shock bolts have sheared off 3 times, Twice when I’ve been out riding, luckily not too far from home. Time to get the angle grinder out.....

    i have done a couple of shock bolts on mine the cause appears to be the preload being a miss match loading up one side and wear in the rubber bushes allowing side play its better now i changed to progressives as they use a bigger bolt/bush set up

    Good point mate, I’ll make sure to set up the new shocks the same.

    I just checked online and there is no preload adjustment on the new shocks, you can adjust the length which will just adjust the ride height.

    "New derby cover"

    Mooneyes do a nice cover, always fancied one myself.

    Just had a look as I’d never heard of them before. They would really go well with the Custom Cycle Engineering rocker box covers. My Moto Parts do rocker box covers at about 1/3 cost of the CCE ones but I’m a bit wary about the quality.

    Might be worth giving Beans a call, he's got loads of stuff over there. Just have to give him time to dig them out.

    Re: Time for a winter update

    I’ve managed to cross a few things off the list;

    • New wheels have been delivered from USA, I just need to get the tyres swapped over
    • Sorted out the clunking suspension
    • Fitted the new slim shock units although they squeak now so I’ve gotta sort that out
    • Got 1” risers made and fitted to the handlebars
    • Finally fitted the polished stainless masking plate to the underside of the top yoke
    • Ordered new derby, inspection and timing covers, hopefully delivered tomorrow
    • Decided against a full respray at the moment, just doing the tank and swinging arm now
    • Decided against the ribbed rocker box covers as they can hardly be seen under the tank
    • The kickstand wedge has to stay otherwise the bike is nearly upright on the stand
    • I got the new calliper at a swap meet in Daytona earlier this year

    I can’t seem to put any pics up at the moment. I’m guessing, but not sure, that it’s because I’m a guest. Can anybody confirm if that’s correct.
