    1989 883 Sporty Hydrualic lifter problem ?

I have a mate with the above bike, it all of a sudden started to make an intermittent noise like a small nut loose + the engine faltered and ran poorly, we've checked the primary side all looks ok, just a wondering if the lifter could lose its hydraulics perhaps making this noise + poor running. Is this easy to check ?

    Cheers Chill

The engine usually continues to run as normal when a lifter bleeds down, just makes a constant racket in time with RPM. You can't tell by looking at them unless of course it's extreme and parts of the lifter are missing ...

Could it be an ignition fault? I can't hear pinking anymore so what it sounds like on an '89 I cannot say, but sudden poor running and a "tinkling" noise? Possible?

Thanks Mike but it sounds very much like a small nut is loose somewhere being thrown about intermitently against the casings ?

Never heard of it happening on a sportster but I had a cir clip let go on a shovel once that caused havoc to the rear cylinder, caused by a bad big end on the rear forked rod. It took a while to locate, and sounded just like something loose, but had I done a compression test it would have shown up before destroying most of the motor. Quick test for some piece of mind.
